IELTS is one of the language tests that you need to take up while planning to study abroad. It is an important criterion to prove your English language skills as a non-native speaker. When you apply for your postgraduate studies in Australia, you need to score minimum 6.5 overall in IELTS, with no band less than 6.0. And when you apply for your undergraduate studies, you need to score minimum 6.0 overall in IELTS.
But did you know that there are some universities in Australia that accept applications from students who have secured a band of 5.5 in any of the sections of IELTS – either speaking, listening, reading or writing?
So if you had scored 5.5, say in the reading or speaking section in your last IELTS exam, but you thought you can’t apply to any Australian institutes for your undergraduate studies, you took the wrong decision.

Accounting
- Southern Cross University
To apply for Bachelor of Accounting at Southern Cross University, students should have an overall IELTS band of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5. This course includes major areas of study like taxation, law, marketing and communication.
- Trinity College – the University of Melbourne
Students looking for foundation programs at Trinity College can choose from electives like accounting, chemistry, physics and design. The program is open to students having an IELTS band 5.5 as well as for students with 6.0 IELTS band.
- Academies Australasia
Students can apply for Advanced Diploma of Accounting at Academies Australasia. An overall IELTS score of 5.5 is expected from students applying for the program.
Business and Management
- RMIT
The foundation program in Business at RMIT accepts applications from students who have scored 5.5 overall in IELTS. This program aims at helping students progress to the degree programs at RMIT.
- Trinity College – the University of Melbourne
Foundation studies at the Trinity College is meant to give students an opportunity to move to the University-level education. Students with an overall IELTS score of 5.5 can apply to such institutes.
- Southern Cross University
· Bachelor of Business major in Aviation Management is for students who want to learn contemporary business tactics. It requires students to secure an IELTS band of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5.
· Bachelor of Business degree is for students who want to be known as specialist business professionals. It holds a lot of possibilities for students who want to explore diverse avenues in business, and can choose any specialized area they like most. Students with IELTS score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 can apply for this course.
· The Associate Degree of Business at Southern Cross University is a pathways programm to the undergraduate degrees in business, accounting and tourism at the University. This degree calls for applicants who have secured IELTS band of 5.5 with no band less than 5.0.
Computer Science and Information Technology
- Academy of Interactive Entertainment
Undergraduate courses in game development and game design and game development and animation are available at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment. These courses require students to have an overall IELTS score of 5.5, with minimum 5.0 band in the writing section and 6.0 in the listening section.
- TAFE Western Australia
The advanced diploma of the screen and media course is open for creative-minded people looking for an undergraduate degree in game development. This course requires students to score 5.5 in IELTS with no band less than 5.0.
Hotel Management and Tourism
Southern Cross University
- Students keen on making a career in hotel management industries can choose to study the undergraduate degree at Southern Cross University – Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management. This course accepts application from students who have scored 6.0 in IELTS, with no band less than 5.5. Also, this course is delivered at The Hotel School Sydney and The Hotel School Melbourne.
